1851-D Type 1 Liberty Head Gold Dollar G$1 NGC MS62 – DAHLONEGA GOLD!

1851-D Gold Dollar, MS62

1851-D G$1 MS62 NGC. Variety 3-E. The Dahlonega Mint struck 3,147 gold dollars in February 1851, and in June an additional 6,735 pieces were delivered for a total mintage of 9,882 coins. The more common of the two known die marriages, Winter suggests that coins of the 3-E variety may have been those examples produced in June.

This issue is similar in overall rarity to the lower mintage 1858-D, and both are tied for tenth rarest honors among D-mint gold dollars. This ranking means that the ’51-D is actually among the more frequently offered dollars from this branch mint. The surfaces of this piece are both well-produced and, for the grade, well-preserved.

There are no outwardly distracting planchet defects, and the strike is bold, if not sharp, in all areas. Rich green-gold undertones peer through equally original orange-gold shadings, and there is a blush of pale powder-blue color on the obverse portrait.

A well-concealed strike through (as produced) at the top rear of Liberty’s head is mentioned for pedigree purposes. Census: 22 in 62, 10 finer (10/15).
