1838 Coronet Head Large Cent 1C PCGS MS62BN
1838 cents are very common in worn condition, and even in Mint State, the population is quite generous. Only with full red color is this date rare. As far as varieties go, 1838 is a fairly boring issue, with only minor differences to distinguish the many dies. The huge mintage resulted in 15 die marriages (Newcomb assigned 14 numbers, and two more were subsequently found by others, but his N-13 proved to be a later die state of N-11). N-9 and N-14 are scarce, while the later discoveries N-15 and N-16 are rare. N-11 (photos) is one of the common varieties.
