The very large production of half dollars in 1824 required many dies, resulting in numerous die marriages—17, in fact. This was accomplished through the combining of 14 obverse dies and 16 reverses. The scarcest of these varieties are O-102 and O-114.
The first is one of two 1824/1 overdates, its obverse also being used with the far more common O-101. Other popular varieties include two different 1824/4 obverses, which resulted in marriages O-109 and O-110. Neither is rare. Easily the most attractive variety is O-103, which features an overdated obverse having so many punchings that the exact line-up is uncertain. It is thus known as 1824 “over various dates.” Fortunately, this is another common die marriage. Irrespective of varieties, the 1824 half dollar is plentiful in Mint State, with a fair number of gems certified, as well.
