1808 Capped Bust Half Dollar 50C NGC VF30
The mintage of 1808 half dollars was quite high, and this issue is common in circulated grades. Mint State examples are scarce but not rare. The Philadelphia Mint was rather careless in using dies that were extremely eroded, and many half dollars of the 1808-14 period reveal blurry or missing details. Peripheral features may be drawn to the border, while the denticles may be missing altogether from heavy die erosion.
The ten die marriages known resulted from the use of ten obverses and nine reverses. There are no truly rare varieties for this date, but O-102 and O-110 are scarce. The most popular variety is O-101, a very obvious 1808/7 overdate that is addressed separately in the entry that follows this one.
